Who this guide is for: GX470 owners with a buzzing, rattling, or silent front door woofer or cargo subwoofer. The guide covers both factory systems, the base 9-speaker system and the 12-speaker Mark Levinson system, and it covers the repair path and the replacement path for each position.
Why these speakers fail: The factory drivers use foam surrounds, and the foam crumbles with age and heat. A speaker with a crumbled surround buzzes on bass notes and loses output. The voice coil and cone often survive, which is why this guide gives the refoam path the same weight as the replacement path.
The Resistance Targets Come First
The two factory systems run different speaker resistances, and the GX470 factory manual prints a standard resistance for each position. A replacement driver has to land inside the range for your system.
| Speaker position | Base 9-speaker system | Mark Levinson 12-speaker system |
|---|---|---|
| Front No. 1 Speaker Assy (front door woofer) | 4 Ω | 7 to 9 Ω |
| W/BOX Speaker Assy No. 1 (cargo subwoofer) | 4 Ω | 7 to 9 Ω |
The factory test for the cargo subwoofer reads across two terminal pairs, 1–3 and 2–4. The factory driver and its box wiring use both pairs, and any replacement plan for the Mark Levinson box has to account for the dual connections. The dual voice coil wiring section below covers that job.
No Aftermarket Driver Bolts In With Zero Work
The factory speakers sit in Toyota-specific plastic brackets and connect with factory plugs. Bare aftermarket drivers ship with standard mounting holes and spade terminals. Every replacement in this guide needs at least one of these steps:
- Transfer the new driver into the factory bracket, with trimming on some drivers
- Mount the driver on an adapter bracket, such as the Metra 82-8146 for the front doors
- Connect the wiring with a harness adapter, such as the Metra 72-8104, or with spade terminals
Depth is the second limit. A GX470 owner who pulled a Mark Levinson front door woofer measured about 3-1/2 in of mounting depth in the door. Drivers deeper than that need a spacer, and a spacer moves the driver toward the door panel while the magnet moves toward the window track. Measure your door before you order a deep driver.
2003 to 2009 GX470: Front Door Woofer Replacement
The front door woofer is a 6×9 driver in both systems. The systems differ on resistance, and the correct pick depends on which system your truck carries.
Mark Levinson front door (7 to 9 Ω)
| Driver | Resistance | Mounting depth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerBass OE-690D | 8 Ω with the coils in series, 2 Ω in parallel | 2.36 in | $104.99 per pair |
| Lexus 86160-0W560 | Factory driver for the 7 to 9 Ω system | Factory depth | $370.00 each, new |

PowerBass OE-690D. This pair of 6×9 dual voice coil woofers is the closest match to a drop-in replacement for the Mark Levinson door. PowerBass publishes 70 W RMS power handling, a 50 Hz to 5.5 kHz frequency range, and 90 dB sensitivity. Wire the two 4 Ω coils on each woofer in series and each woofer presents 8 Ω to the amplifier. A GX470 Mark Levinson owner on IH8MUD installed these woofers and reported good sound, and his install needed a slight trim to the plastic bracket. The 2.36 in mounting depth clears the measured door depth with room to spare.
Lexus 86160-0W560. The factory Mark Levinson front door speaker carries this part number. It drops into the factory bracket and connects with the factory plug. Used copies sell for less than new copies, and a used copy with a tired surround is a refoam candidate, so inspect the surround in the listing photos before you buy a used one.
Tang Band W69-1042J. Tang Band publishes this 6×9 subwoofer at 8 Ω with a 35 to 350 Hz range and 90 W RMS power handling. The shape and the resistance match the Mark Levinson door, and the mounting depth runs 4-3/16 in against the roughly 3-1/2 in that an owner measured in the door. Plan on a spacer and a window clearance check before you commit to this driver, and treat it as a project fit.
Base system front door (4 Ω)
| Driver | Resistance | Mounting depth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRV Audio 69FR250-4 | 4 Ω | 3.58 in | $74.91 each |
Price checked October 29, 2026 at Parts Express.
PRV Audio 69FR250-4. PRV publishes this 6×9 full-range driver at 4 Ω and 125 W RMS. The mounting depth of 3.58 in sits at the measured door limit, so test fit one door before you transfer both drivers. The front door in the base system already carries separate midrange and tweeter drivers, so the high-frequency half of a full-range driver duplicates drivers the truck already has. A woofer-only driver suits the position better when you find one at 4 Ω with a shallow mount.
Standard 4 Ω 6×9 car speakers. The base system takes any 4 Ω 6×9 with a mounting depth under 3-1/2 in. Mount the pair on Metra 82-8146 adapter brackets and connect them with Metra 72-8104 harness adapters so the factory harness stays intact.
2003 to 2009 GX470: Cargo Subwoofer Replacement
The cargo subwoofer sits behind the passenger-side cargo panel in a factory enclosure. The factory driver measures in the 6-1/2 in class, and the Simply Speakers kit listing for this speaker gives a 6.125 in surround diameter. Two part numbers cover this position:
- 86160-0W030 — the subwoofer speaker
- 86150-0W030 — the Speaker Assy W/Box No. 1, the speaker and enclosure assembly
Mark Levinson cargo subwoofer (7 to 9 Ω)
| Driver | Resistance | Mounting depth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyle PLPW6D | 8 Ω with the dual 4 Ω coils in series | See the fit note below | $24.99 each |
| Dayton Audio DC160-8 | 8 Ω | 3.24 in | $34.98 each |
| GRS 6PF-8 | 8 Ω | 3.06 in | $15.99 each |
| Lexus 86150-0W030 assembly | Factory assembly for the 7 to 9 Ω system | Factory enclosure | $139.99, used |

Pyle PLPW6D. An owner review reports this 6.5 in dual voice coil driver installed in a GX470 Mark Levinson subwoofer box, with minor trimming of the plastic basket to seat it in the enclosure. Wire the dual 4 Ω coils in series for 8 Ω. The price sits far below every other option in this table, and the fit report comes from a single owner, so dry-fit the driver in the box before you wire it.
Dayton Audio DC160-8. Parts Express lists this 6-1/2 in woofer for woofer, midbass, and small subwoofer duty. The baffle cutout measures 5.69 in and the depth measures 3.24 in. It gives the Mark Levinson box a single-coil 8 Ω driver from a mainstream driver line, and you wire its coil to the box leads following your photos of the factory wiring.
GRS 6PF-8. This 6-1/2 in woofer matches on size and resistance at the lowest price in the table, and it carries a foam surround. Expect the same age failure as the factory foam on a longer timeline, and expect bass output below a dedicated subwoofer driver.
Lexus 86150-0W030. The complete factory assembly swaps the enclosure and the speaker as one unit. The linked listing is a used assembly, and used assemblies carry the same foam age question as your own, so ask the seller for surround photos.
Base system cargo subwoofer (4 Ω)
| Driver | Resistance | Mounting depth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dayton Audio DCS165-4 | 4 Ω | 3.25 in | $64.98 each |
| GRS 6LPSW-4 | 4 Ω | 1.95 in | $18.99 each |
| Tang Band W6-1139SIF | 4 Ω | 4.33 in | $92.69 each |

Dayton Audio DCS165-4. This 6-1/2 in subwoofer matches the base box on resistance, size class, and depth. The baffle cutout measures 5.62 in, the depth measures 3.25 in, and Dayton rates it at 100 W RMS. It is the strongest Parts Express match for the base enclosure in this guide.
GRS 6LPSW-4. The low profile frame mounts 1.95 in deep, which clears shallow enclosures with room to spare. It trades output for that shallow mount, and it suits a base system that needs a working subwoofer on a small budget.
Tang Band W6-1139SIF. Tang Band builds this 6-1/2 in subwoofer with 11.5 mm of excursion, and the frame runs 6.95 in across with a 4.33 in mounting depth. The depth exceeds the Dayton option by more than an inch, and the factory enclosure needs modification before this driver seats. Pick it for the excursion and plan the enclosure work as part of the job.
Dual Voice Coil Wiring for an 8 Ω Load
Two drivers in this guide reach the Mark Levinson range through series wiring: the PowerBass OE-690D at the front doors and the Pyle PLPW6D in the cargo box. Each driver carries two 4 Ω voice coils. Series wiring adds the coils together for an 8 Ω load, and 8 Ω sits inside the factory manual range of 7 to 9 Ω.
Wire one driver in series in three steps:
- Connect the amplifier positive lead to the positive terminal of coil 1.
- Connect the negative terminal of coil 1 to the positive terminal of coil 2 with a short jumper wire.
- Connect the negative terminal of coil 2 to the amplifier negative lead.
Parallel wiring of the same coils gives 2 Ω, and 2 Ω falls outside the factory range for both Mark Levinson positions. Confirm your wiring with a multimeter before you connect the amplifier. A series-wired pair of 4 Ω coils reads close to 8 Ω at the terminals.

The Refoam Path
Refoaming keeps the factory driver, the factory bracket, and the factory plug. It fits when the cone is intact and the voice coil moves freely with no scraping sound when you press the cone gently by hand. A driver with a torn cone or a scraping coil needs replacement.
Simply Speakers sells model-specific kits for both positions:
- The FSK-6×9 kit for the 86160-0W560 door speaker includes two foam surrounds, adhesive, a brush, and instructions, and it covers both front door speakers. It sells for $30.00 with free shipping.
- The kit for the 86160-0W030 subwoofer speaker includes one 6.125 in foam surround and adhesive. It sells for $25.00 with free shipping.
Prices checked October 29, 2026 at the linked seller.
The job runs in this order: remove the old surround and clean the cone edge and the frame, glue the new surround to the cone, let that joint cure, then glue the outer edge to the frame while you keep the cone centered. Follow the kit instructions for cure times, and test the speaker at low volume before you reinstall the trim.
Install Notes
Front doors. Disconnect the battery before you start. Pull the door trim with trim tools and take a photo of every connector before you unplug it. The factory woofer sits in its plastic bracket at the bottom of the door. The PowerBass install report above trimmed that bracket slightly, so dry-fit your driver in the bracket on the bench and trim only after you see the interference. Check the magnet clearance against the window path with the window down before you reinstall the trim.
Cargo subwoofer. The enclosure sits behind the passenger-side cargo panel. Remove the panel, unbolt the enclosure, and swap the driver on the bench. The factory box wiring uses two terminal pairs, so photograph the box wiring before you disconnect it, and match your replacement wiring to the photos. If you wire a dual voice coil driver in series, it takes one pair of leads, and you should insulate any unused pair.
Testing. Play bass-heavy music at low volume first and listen to each repaired position on its own by fading and balancing the system. Raise the volume in steps and listen for buzzing, which points to a surround glue joint or a seating problem at the bracket.
Common Mistakes
- Ordering by size alone. A 6×9 label covers drivers from 2.36 in to more than 4 in of mounting depth. The GX470 door gives you about 3-1/2 in. Check the depth spec on every driver before you order.
- Ignoring the system resistance. The base system and the Mark Levinson system differ by a factor of two at the front doors and the cargo box. A driver that suits one system loads the other system’s amplifier outside the factory manual range.
- Wiring dual coils in parallel for a Mark Levinson truck. Parallel wiring presents 2 Ω to an amplifier channel that the factory manual rates at 7 to 9 Ω. Series wiring is the correct configuration for these drivers in a Mark Levinson truck.
- Cutting the factory harness. Harness adapters exist for the door speakers, and the cargo box takes spade connections at its terminals. Keep the factory wiring intact so the truck can return to stock.
- Reinstalling trim before testing. Test each position with the trim off. A buzz or a dead channel costs minutes with the panel off and an hour with the panel back on.
FAQ
Does the Mark Levinson system have a cargo subwoofer?
Yes. The factory manual lists the W/BOX Speaker Assy No. 1 for the 12-speaker system with a standard resistance of 7 to 9 Ω, the same range as the front door woofers.
How do I know which system my truck has?
Mark Levinson trucks carry Mark Levinson branding on the audio system and run 12 speakers. Base trucks run 9 speakers. The resistance targets in this guide follow that split, and a multimeter reading across a pulled factory speaker confirms it. A healthy factory Mark Levinson woofer reads in the 7 to 9 Ω range, and a healthy base woofer reads close to 4 Ω.
Will a 4 Ω speaker damage the Mark Levinson amplifier?
The factory manual specifies 7 to 9 Ω for the Mark Levinson front door woofer and the cargo subwoofer. A 4 Ω driver draws more current from that amplifier channel at any given volume. Match the manual range for Mark Levinson trucks.
Can I refoam only one door speaker?
You can, and the other door’s surround carries the same age and the same foam. The door kit includes surrounds for both speakers, so most owners do the pair in one session.
Does Parts Express sell an 8 Ω subwoofer for the Mark Levinson cargo box?
The Parts Express subwoofer driver catalog in the 6-1/2 in size runs 4 Ω across the current lineup. The 8 Ω options for that box are woofers, the Dayton DC160-8 and the GRS 6PF-8 above, or a dual voice coil driver wired in series, the Pyle PLPW6D above.
What about the rear door speakers?
This guide covers the front door woofers and the cargo subwoofer. The factory manual gives the rear speaker on 12-speaker trucks a standard resistance of 14 to 18 Ω, which is a different matching problem, and the rear doors take a 6-3/4 in driver per Crutchfield’s GX470 fitment data.
Bottom line: match the resistance for your system first, check the mounting depth second, and pick between a refoam of the factory driver and a replacement driver third. For Mark Levinson trucks, the PowerBass OE-690D pair solves the front doors and a series-wired Pyle PLPW6D solves the cargo box on a budget. For base trucks, the Dayton DCS165-4 solves the cargo box and any shallow 4 Ω 6×9 solves the doors.
