The twin-turbo V6 makes more power and tows more than any GX before it. The old V8s have twenty years of proof. Here is the honest three-way math, the first-year problems and their fixes, and which truck to buy.
Who This Guide Is For
You are cross-shopping three very different trucks: a new GX550 at $65,000 to $82,000, a used GX460 anywhere from the mid teens to the high $60,000s depending on year and miles, and a used GX470 from under $10,000 to the low $20,000s. This guide answers the questions that keep showing up in the forums. Will the twin-turbo V6 be as reliable as the old V8s? What went wrong in the first model year, and what actually fixes it? Which trim should you buy? What can it really tow and carry? Is the Overtrail worth it, or is the Land Cruiser 250 the smarter buy? Should you save $50,000 and buy the old 4.7 instead? Should you wait for the hybrid?
This is a buying guide, not a repair manual. For mechanical how-tos, the related guides are linked below.
What the GX550 Actually Is
The third generation GX rides on the TNGA-F body-on-frame platform shared with the Land Cruiser 250, the Sequoia, and the Tundra. The 4.6 liter V8 is gone. Every GX550 runs the V35A-FTS: a 3.4 liter twin-turbo V6 making 349 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm, paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic. Full-time 4WD is standard, with a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential on every trim.[1]
That torque number deserves a pause. 479 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm is 150 more lb-ft than the GX460’s V8, arriving far lower in the rev range. It is the reason the GX550 tows over 9,000 lbs while the old trucks topped out at 6,500. Everything about this truck is built around that engine.
The Engine Question: Will the Twin-Turbo V6 Be as Reliable as the Old V8s?
This is the question that matters most, and the honest answer is that nobody knows yet. Here is what is actually known.
The 2UZ-FE V8 in the GX470 routinely runs past 250,000 miles with basic maintenance. My own 2005 GX470 just rolled past 344,000 miles on its original engine and transmission. The 1UR-FE V8 in the GX460 has a similar reputation and a twenty-year parts and knowledge base behind it. That is what two decades of proof looks like.
The V35A-FTS is not a GX-only experiment. It has been in the Tundra and LX600 since the 2022 model year and in the Sequoia i-FORCE MAX hybrid. So there is a growing multi-year dataset, and the verdict so far is mixed rather than catastrophic. Most owners have no engine trouble. But there is one verified defect, and it is a serious one.
Machining debris left in some V35A engines during manufacturing can damage the crankshaft main bearings, causing knocking, rough running, stalling, or failure to start. Toyota first recalled 102,092 Tundras and LX600s in May 2024. In November 2025 the recall expanded by 126,691 vehicles and pulled in the 2024 GX550: 3,717 GX550s are covered by NHTSA campaign 25V-767. The remedy is an inspection procedure that evaluates bearing condition, with engine replacement where the inspection cannot clear the bearings. Repairs are free.[5][15]
That recall is the only verified engine defect. Everything else you read online is anecdote. There are scattered forum reports of early engine failures and dealer engine replacements at very low mileage, but no source quantifies a failure rate. Do not treat any of it as a rate. Do not treat any of it as proof the engine is a 300,000 mile motor either. The V8s earned their reputation over two decades. The V35A has been in customer hands for four years with one serious manufacturing defect on record.
My advice, as someone who has watched Toyota truck engines for a living and driven one V8 past 344,000 miles: do not buy a GX550 for proven long-term reliability, because the proof does not exist yet. Buy it for what it provably is: the most powerful and capable GX ever built, backed by a warranty. The 4 year, 50,000 mile basic and 6 year, 70,000 mile powertrain warranties cover the risk window of the known defect.[10]
The First Model Year Report Card
First-year trucks have first-year problems. The GX550 is no exception. Here is what owners and service bulletins have actually documented, in rough order of how much it should bother you, plus what owners are doing about each one.
Engine recall. Covered above. If you are buying a used 2024, check the VIN for open campaigns and confirm the recall work was done. 2025 and 2026 trucks are not in the recall population so far.
Harsh 2 to 1 downshift. Owners reported a clunky, jerky downshift when slowing to a stop. Lexus issued bulletin L-SB-0042-25 covering certain 2024 and 2025 GX550s; the fix is an engine control software update, not a hardware replacement.[6] Test drive the specific truck and pay attention to how it behaves coming to a stop.
Overtrail vibration. Long owner threads describe a washboard-like jitter or rotational vibration at moderate speeds in some Overtrail and Overtrail+ trucks, persisting after wheel and tire replacement. It does not affect every truck, and some owners describe their trucks as smooth. There is no confirmed root cause or official fix as of October 2026.[12] What owners are actually doing to reduce it:
- Road-force balancing the tires. A Hunter road-force balance found out-of-spec tires on several trucks, and replacing the worst ones made the biggest single improvement. One dealer replaced two high road-force tires and the owner reported the vibration 95 percent gone.
- Fixing tire pressure. Multiple owners found their trucks delivered with tires at 40 to 46 psi. The Overtrail door jamb sticker calls for 35 psi. Dropping to 34 to 36 psi made a big, immediate difference for several owners.
- Removing the factory roof rack and cross rails. Several owners report the vibration disappearing after removing the factory roof basket or cross rails, blaming wind buffeting. If you do not need the rack, try the truck without it before spending money elsewhere.
- The brake shim kit. One owner reported that the brake pad shim kit (see brake squeal below) eliminated the vibration, the hood flutter, and the squeal all at once. Mechanically inclined owners are skeptical that shims explain a constant vibration, so treat this as one anecdote, not a fix.
Brake squeal. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0053-25 addresses front brake squeal on certain 2024 through 2026 GX550s with a replacement pad damper kit. Confirm the work was performed on any used truck.[13]
Hood flutter. The aluminum hood visibly flexes at highway speed on some trucks. This one has an official fix. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0013-25, issued February 2025, covers abnormal hood fluttering or vibration at 25 mph and higher on certain 2024 GX550s. The repair removes the hood, inserts urethane foam blocks between the outer panel and the hood brace, injects 3M NVH dampening material at specified points, cures it for 24 hours, and reassembles with new clips. Owners who have had it done report the flutter vastly improved, though some movement remains by design.[18] Two notes from the bulletin and the forums: the technician is supposed to verify hood latch position and overslam bumper contact first, because a misadjusted latch can cause the same symptom; and one owner had a dealer send the truck to a body shop that re-glued the separated support grid to the underside of the hood. If your used 2024 flutters, ask for L-SB-0013-25 by name.
Instrument display blanking. NHTSA campaign 26V-341 covers certain 2024 and 2025 trucks where portions of the 12.3 inch instrument display can stay blank at startup, hiding required information. The remedy is a free software update. Check the VIN.
Load capacity labels. NHTSA campaign 26V-179 covers certain 2024 and 2025 trucks with inaccurate load-carrying capacity modification labels. The remedy is a corrected label. Minor, but check it, because you are about to read the payload sticker closely anyway.
The takeaway: the 2024 trucks carry the most first-year risk, specifically the engine recall population. A 2025 or 2026 has the downshift software, the brake fix, the hood flutter bulletin available, and no recall coverage. That is the buy-now case if you want a GX550.
New GX550 vs Used GX460 vs Used GX470: The Honest Math
Here is the three-generation market as of late 2026, in observed asking-price bands. These are what sellers are asking, not appraised values, and clean low-mile trucks sit at the top of each band. Prices will drift.
| Generation | Years | Engine | Observed asking prices, late 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| GX470 | 2003 to 2004 | 4.7L V8 | $8,000 to $14,000 |
| GX470 | 2005 to 2007 | 4.7L V8 | $9,000 to $17,000 |
| GX470 | 2008 to 2009 | 4.7L V8 | $12,000 to $22,000 |
| GX460 | 2010 to 2013 | 4.6L V8 | $13,000 to $20,000 |
| GX460 | 2014 to 2016 | 4.6L V8 | $15,000 to $27,000 |
| GX460 | 2017 to 2019 | 4.6L V8 | $18,000 to $35,000 |
| GX460 | 2020 to 2021 | 4.6L V8 | $40,000 to $48,000 |
| GX460 | 2022 | 4.6L V8 | $48,000 to $56,000 |
| GX460 | 2023 | 4.6L V8 | $52,000 to $68,000 |
| GX550 | 2024 and newer | 3.4L twin-turbo V6 | $65,285 and up, new |

A new GX550 Premium costs about the same as the nicest used 2023 GX460. A two to three year old GX460 saves you roughly $10,000 to $20,000. A clean GX470 saves you $45,000 to $55,000 and still gives you a body-on-frame V8 Lexus that tows 6,500 lbs. That is the real spread.
The GX470 case. The cheapest way into a GX is also the most proven. The 2UZ-FE is the engine that built the reputation: timing belt every 90,000 miles, dead simple to work on, parts everywhere. What to watch: frame rust, the rear air suspension (budget for a coil conversion if it is tired), and the timing belt service history. Every one of those jobs is documented in the guides on this site. Buy the newest, lowest-mile, rust-free truck you can find, pay for the belt service if it is due, and drive it for a decade. The downsides are real: older safety tech, worse fuel economy, and a 17 to 23 year old truck will need old-truck maintenance no matter how good the engine is.
The GX460 case. The sweet spot for most buyers. The 1UR-FE V8 has a timing chain instead of a belt, the trucks are modern enough for daily family duty, and every common repair is documented. Watch for the timing cover oil leak, frame rust on northern trucks, and the secondary air injection system on early trucks. A 2017 to 2019 in the low $20,000s is the value play of the three generations.
Depreciation works in your favor on any used truck. The first owner already absorbed the steepest drop. GX460s hold value well because buyers trust the V8, but they still drop.
The payment and insurance gap is real. A $65,000 truck financed at typical rates costs substantially more per month than a $45,000 truck, and full coverage on a new luxury SUV runs higher. A $15,000 GX470 can be bought outright. Run the actual numbers with your lender and insurer before you fall in love with a trim.
Fuel cost is nearly a wash between the 550 and the 460. The GX460 is EPA rated 15 city, 18 highway, 16 combined, and it also calls for premium fuel. That is one combined mpg less than the GX550.[1] At 12,000 miles a year the difference is a couple hundred dollars, not a decision driver. The GX470 is a couple mpg thirstier than either, so budget accordingly.
What the money buys. The GX550 gives you 48 more horsepower and 150 more lb-ft of torque than the 460, roughly 2,500 more pounds of tow rating, modern tech (14 inch screen, current driver assists), and a warranty. The used GX460 gives you a proven V8 with a twenty-year parts and knowledge base, every repair documented in guides like the ones on this site, and a truck you can keep for a decade without worrying about unproven electronics. The GX470 gives you the same formula at half the price of the 460, minus modernity.
My advice: if you keep trucks for ten-plus years and 200,000-plus miles, the used GX460 is the rational buy until the V35A has a longer track record, and the GX470 is the rational buy if purchase price matters more than modern tech. If you rotate every five to six years inside the warranty window and want the most capable stock GX, the GX550 is the buy. The Ultimate GX buying guide covers what to inspect on a used 470 or 460 before you pay.
Trim Breakdown: Is the Overtrail Worth It?
Six trims, one engine. The differences are wheels, seats, suspension, and off-road hardware. Here is the full matrix.
| Trim | Starting MSRP (incl. delivery) | Seating | Wheels | Ground clearance | Max towing | Payload |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $65,285 | 7 | 20 in | 8.66 in | 9,063 lbs | ~1,372 lbs (observed door sticker) |
| Premium+ | $69,750 | 7 | 20 in | 8.66 in | 9,063 lbs | Check the yellow sticker |
| Overtrail | $72,930 | 5 | 18 in (33 in A/T) | 9.84 in | 9,096 lbs | ~1,545 lbs (manual) |
| Luxury | $77,750 | 7 | 22 in | 8.66 in | 9,063 lbs | ~1,235 lbs (manual) |
| Overtrail+ | $80,395 | 5 | 18 in (33 in A/T) | 9.84 in | 9,063 lbs | ~1,480 lbs (estimate) |
| Luxury+ | $81,750 | 7 | 22 in | 8.66 in | 9,063 lbs | ~1,235 lbs (manual) |
Payload figures come from the owners manual and one owner-photographed door sticker; wheels and port-installed accessories move every number, so the yellow B-pillar sticker on the specific truck is the only number that counts.[7]

Premium, $65,285. The value play. Seven seats, 20 inch wheels, full-time 4WD, Torsen center diff, and the same 349 hp drivetrain as every other trim. If you want the GX550 experience at the lowest price, start here and stop.
Premium+, $69,750. Adds comfort and tech. Same capability as Premium.
Overtrail, $72,930. The off-road grade. Five seats, 18 inch wheels with 33 inch all-terrain tires, E-KDSS, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, the Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system, a standard air compressor, and pre-wiring for auxiliary switches. For 2025, Overtrail grades get a one inch suspension lift for 9.84 inches of ground clearance versus 8.66 on the other trims.[3][4]
Overtrail+, $80,395. Overtrail capability with the luxury cabin. For 2025 it overtook the Luxury trim in price.
Luxury, $77,750. Seven seats, 22 inch wheels, semi-aniline leather, Mark Levinson audio. The on-road flagship.
Luxury+, $81,750. Adaptive variable suspension, panoramic roof, massage seats. The most expensive GX550.
Is the Overtrail worth it? If you will actually use it off road, yes, and it is not close. E-KDSS, a locking rear diff, 33 inch tires, and nearly 10 inches of clearance from the factory is a package that would cost you $8,000 to $12,000 to replicate aftermarket on a Premium, and you would do it without a warranty on the work. The air compressor and aux switch pre-wiring are small touches that show Lexus actually talked to overlanders. On the other trims, a portable compressor such as the VIAIR 400P covers air-up duty after a trail run. If you will never leave pavement, buy the Premium and keep the $7,600. E-KDSS is a sophisticated system; understand what you are buying before you commit. The KDSS guide explains the technology and the lift compatibility questions.
One more consideration: the Overtrail seats five. The Premium and Luxury seat seven. If you need the third row, the Overtrail is not your trim.
Payload and Towing: The Real Numbers
Tow ratings first. Lexus rates the Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and Overtrail+ at 9,063 lbs and the Overtrail at 9,096 lbs, with a standard Class IV hitch receiver.[2] That is a genuine 2,500-plus lb jump over the GX460’s 6,500 lbs and the GX470’s 6,500 lbs.
| Trim | Max towing | Payload (manual or observed) | Wheels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | 9,063 lbs | ~1,372 lbs (owner door sticker) | 20 in |
| Premium+ | 9,063 lbs | Check yellow sticker | 20 in |
| Overtrail | 9,096 lbs | ~1,545 lbs (manual) | 18 in |
| Luxury | 9,063 lbs | ~1,235 lbs (manual) | 22 in |
| Overtrail+ | 9,063 lbs | ~1,480 lbs (estimate) | 18 in |
| Luxury+ | 9,063 lbs | ~1,235 lbs (manual) | 22 in |

Payload is where buyers get surprised. The owners manual lists 1,545 lbs of payload for the Overtrail on 18 inch wheels, dropping to 1,235 lbs for the Luxury on 22 inch wheels. An IH8MUD member photographed a GX550 Premium door sticker reading 1,372 lbs of payload.[7] Wheels, options, and port-installed accessories such as rock rails and roof racks all eat into that number pound for pound, so check the yellow sticker on the specific truck, not the brochure.
Off-road geometry, per the dealer brochure:
| Trim | Approach | Breakover | Departure | Ground clearance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium / Premium+ | 26 deg | 23 deg | 23 deg | 8.66 in |
| Luxury / Luxury+ | 26 deg | 23 deg | 21 deg | 8.66 in |
| Overtrail / Overtrail+ | 26 deg | 24 deg | 22 deg | 9.84 in |
Note: MotorTrend printed a single set of figures, 26/22/24, with no trim split. The table above uses the brochure numbers.[4]
Do the tongue weight math before you buy a trailer, and verify it with a real scale such as the Sherline LM 1000. The manual specifies 9 to 11 percent tongue weight.[7] A 7,000 lb trailer puts roughly 700 lbs on the hitch. On an Overtrail with 1,545 lbs of payload, that leaves about 845 lbs for passengers, gear, and everything else. On a Luxury at 1,235 lbs, it leaves about 535. Four adults and their luggage can exceed that before you add a cooler. The GX550 tows heavy trailers far better than the old trucks, but payload is still the binding constraint, exactly as it is on the GX470 and GX460. If towing is a primary use case, the Premium and Overtrail grades carry the most payload.
Also check gross combined weight rating. The manual lists Overtrail GCWR from 13,700 to 15,165 lbs depending on configuration.[7] You cannot max out tow rating and payload at the same time. Nobody can, on any truck.
Overtrail vs Land Cruiser 250
This is the comparison every buyer asks about, because the two trucks share the TNGA-F platform, the Tahara assembly line, and the same engineering team. They are cousins, not twins.
| GX550 Overtrail | Land Cruiser 250 | |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | 3.4L twin-turbo V6 | 2.4L turbo four hybrid (i-FORCE MAX) |
| Horsepower | 349 hp | 326 hp |
| Torque | 479 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm | 465 lb-ft |
| Transmission | 10-speed automatic | 8-speed automatic |
| Max towing | 9,096 lbs | 6,000 lbs |
| EPA combined | 17 mpg (premium fuel) | 23 mpg |
| Fuel tank | 21.1 gal | 17.9 gal |
| Ground clearance | 9.84 in | 8.7 in |
| Sway bar disconnect | E-KDSS, front and rear | Front only (SDM) |
| Rear locker | Yes | Yes (plus center locker) |
| Starting price | $72,930 | $57,600 (1958) / $63,675 (Land Cruiser) |

Head to head, the GX550 wins on power (349 vs 326 hp), torque (479 vs 465 lb-ft), towing (about 9,100 vs 6,000 lbs), fuel range (21 gallon tank vs 17.9), and interior luxury. The Land Cruiser wins on fuel economy (23 vs 17 combined), purchase price (roughly $10,000 to $15,000 less comparably equipped), and approach angle. The GX’s E-KDSS disconnects front and rear sway bars; the LC250 disconnects only the front.[8]
One careful owner comparison put an as-configured Land Cruiser at $70,245 against a GX550 Overtrail+ at $87,209, a $17,964 gap, and concluded: if you tow, get the V6; if you are going to build it and beat it up, get the Land Cruiser.[17]
My advice matches that. Buy the GX550 Overtrail if you want the most refined, most powerful, best-towing version of this platform and you will keep it mostly stock. Buy the Land Cruiser 250 if fuel economy matters, if the price gap matters, or if you plan to modify heavily and would rather beat up a $60,000 truck than an $80,000 one. Neither is a bad truck.
The Hybrid Question
Lexus confirmed at the GX550 launch that a hybrid powertrain would join the lineup later. That is the last official word. As of the first big GX update reported for the Japan market, the hybrid is not included in that round of changes.[14] Every “2027 GX hybrid” video on YouTube is speculation built on that original promise, not on new information.
Should you wait? The i-FORCE MAX hardware already exists in the Sequoia and Land Cruiser 250, so a GX hybrid is technically straightforward. But waiting for an unannounced vehicle is a good way to never buy a truck. If the hybrid arrives, expect it to trade some towing capacity and add complexity for better city mileage, following the Sequoia pattern. If you need a truck now, buy on what exists. If you can genuinely wait two years and fuel economy is your top priority, the Land Cruiser 250 hybrid is on sale today.
Buyer Checklist
This is a buying guide, so here is the inspection list instead of a tools list. Use it on any GX550, new or used.
- Check the VIN for recalls. Any 2024 in the V35A machining debris population needs the inspection done and documented. Confirm 25V-767 is closed on that VIN before money changes hands. Also check 26V-341 (instrument display) and 26V-179 (load labels) on 2024 and 2025 trucks.
- Drive it cold, then drive it hot. The harsh downshift bulletin covers trucks that jerk from second to first when slowing. Feel for it in stop and go traffic. Confirm the L-SB-0042-25 software update was applied.
- Listen to the brakes. Early trucks squealed. The fix is L-SB-0053-25. Confirm it was performed on a used truck.
- Read the yellow door sticker. Payload varies by trim and options. If you tow, you need the actual number on the truck you are buying.
- On an Overtrail, drive at 25 to 45 mph on imperfect pavement. Some owners report a jitter or vibration the dealer could not resolve. Check the tire pressures first (dealers overinflate), try it with the roof rack removed if it has one, and ask for a Hunter road-force balance. If the specific truck does it and it bothers you, walk away. There are other trucks.
- Check the tires. Overtrail 33 inch all-terrains wear faster and cost more than the 20 and 22 inch street tires. Price a replacement set before you negotiate.
- Look at the hood at highway speed. If it flutters, ask for bulletin L-SB-0013-25 by name. The foam and NVH fix exists and owners say it works.
- Verify options against the window sticker. Air compressor, aux switch pre-wiring, cool box, and roof rack are easy to assume and expensive to add.
- On a used truck, pull the service history. Lexus Drivers site, dealer records, an OBD-II scan for stored codes with a tool like the OBDLink MX+, and a battery load test with a TOPDON BT100. A one owner truck with dealer service history is worth paying for.
- Price insurance before you sign. Get a real quote on the VIN. New luxury SUVs surprise buyers.
FAQ
Is the GX550 worth it over a used GX460 or GX470? If you keep trucks a decade or more, the used GX460 is the rational buy: proven V8, deep parts and knowledge base, $10,000 to $20,000 cheaper. The GX470 is the budget rational buy: the same formula for half the price of a 460, with older tech. If you rotate trucks every five to six years and want the most power, towing, and tech, the GX550 is worth it inside the warranty window.
Should I just buy a GX470 instead? If purchase price is the top priority and you can live with a 17 to 23 year old truck, yes. A clean 2008 or 2009 with the timing belt done is the cheapest reliable way into a body-on-frame Lexus V8. Budget for old-truck maintenance: suspension, rubber, and the rear air suspension. Check the frame for rust.
Will the twin-turbo V6 be as reliable as the old V8s? Unknown. The only verified defect is the machining debris issue behind the 2024 recall. There is no 200,000 mile dataset for this engine. Anyone who tells you it will or will not last 300,000 miles is guessing. My own 2005 GX470 is past 344,000 miles. That is what proven looks like.
Should I buy now or wait? If you want a GX550, buy a 2025 or newer rather than a 2024. The 2024s carry the recall population and the earliest software. Do not wait for the hybrid; Lexus has announced no date.
Is a GX hybrid coming? Lexus promised one at launch. As of October 2026 there is no announced date, and the first big model update reportedly does not include it. Treat timelines you see online as rumor.
Which GX550 trim is best for off-roading? The Overtrail. E-KDSS, locking rear diff, 33 inch all-terrains, 9.84 inches of clearance, air compressor, and aux switch pre-wiring, all factory. The Overtrail+ adds luxury to the same hardware.
Is the Overtrail worth it? For real off-road use, yes. Replicating its hardware aftermarket costs more than the trim premium and voids no warranties it keeps. For pavement-only driving, buy the Premium and save the money.
GX550 Overtrail or Land Cruiser 250? Tow heavy or want maximum refinement: GX550. Want better mileage, a lower price, or a truck you will modify hard: Land Cruiser 250.
What is the real payload of a GX550? 1,235 to 1,545 lbs depending on trim and wheels, per the owners manual, with an owner-observed 1,372 lbs on a Premium door sticker. Check the yellow door sticker on the specific truck. Wheels, options, and port-installed accessories reduce it.
What can the GX550 tow? 9,063 lbs on most trims and 9,096 lbs on the Overtrail, with a weight-distributing hitch such as the Equal-i-zer 4-point. Tongue weight should be 9 to 11 percent of trailer weight.
What is the real-world MPG? Owners report roughly 13 to 17 mpg in the city and 19 to 21 on the highway. EPA rates it 15/21/17. It takes premium fuel.
