Why your GX lights up the check engine, VSC TRAC, and VSC OFF lights together, the driveway diagnostic sequence, and the no-start flashing dash fix.
Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for GX470 and GX460 owners staring at a dash full of warning lights. The classic case is the check engine light plus VSC TRAC plus VSC OFF, all on at once. It also covers the cousin problems: VSC lights with no check engine light, VSC lights that appeared right after a lift or an alignment, and the truck that will not start while the dash lights flash. If your GX550 has these lights, this guide is not for you yet.

The One Rule: The VSC Lights Follow the Check Engine Light
Read this first and the rest of the guide gets simple. On these trucks, VSC TRAC and VSC OFF are usually not reporting a VSC problem. They are reporting that the engine computer found a problem and told the skid control computer to stand down.
The factory manual spells out the mechanism under DTC C1201, Engine Control System Malfunction. When the engine control module detects a fault, it sends a malfunction signal to the skid control ECU. The skid control ECU stores C1201 and prohibits TRAC and VSC control. On the GX460 it also prohibits downhill assist, crawl control, and multi-terrain select. The factory inspection procedure for C1201 does not touch the VSC system at all. Step one is to check the engine control system for DTCs and repair the engine fault first.
That is why the lights arrive as a trio. The check engine light is the leader. VSC TRAC and VSC OFF are followers. Fix the engine fault and the VSC lights usually go out on their own. Owners see this constantly: one IH8MUD thread shows a P0456 EVAP code lighting all three, and all three cleared when the underlying fault was fixed. Another owner fixed P0442 and P0456 with a replacement gas cap and the lights stayed off for more than 3,000 miles.
So the diagnostic rule is short. Check engine light plus VSC lights means read the engine codes first. Do not buy ABS sensors. Do not price a skid control ECU. Read the engine codes.
What Each Light Actually Means
Check engine. The engine computer stored a fault code. This is the one that matters most.
VSC TRAC. Traction control is disabled. With the trio lit, it is disabled because of the engine fault, not because traction control is broken.
VSC OFF. Stability control is off. Same story as VSC TRAC when it appears with the check engine light. Note: if VSC OFF is lit by itself right after you pressed the VSC OFF button on the dash, that is not a fault. Press the button again.
ABS. Anti-lock brake fault. If this is on with no check engine light, the problem is in the brake system itself.
SLIP. The slip indicator flashes when traction or stability control is actively working. If it stays on solid with the trio, treat it as part of the follower group.
BRAKE. Low brake fluid, parking brake engaged, or a brake system fault. Check the fluid level before anything else.
Security indicator. The small red car-with-a-key icon. It flashes with the key removed. That is normal. Its behavior matters for the no-start diagnosis later in this guide.
The Driveway Diagnostic Sequence
Work top to bottom. Do not skip the code reading.

- 1. Note exactly which lights are on. Check engine plus VSC TRAC plus VSC OFF is the engine fault path. VSC or ABS lights with no check engine light is the brake and VSC path, covered later.
- 2. Do the five minute checks. Tighten the gas cap until it clicks at least three times. Check the brake fluid level between MIN and MAX on the reservoir. Pop the hood and check the battery terminals for corrosion and tightness. These are free and they fix a real share of Christmas tree dashes.
- 3. Read the engine codes. Plug an OBD-II scanner into the DLC3 port under the driver side dash. Write down every code, not just the first one. A generic reader shows engine P-codes fine. A basic reader cannot see ABS and VSC chassis codes, but you do not need a more capable scanner. The paperclip method in the next section reads them.
- 4. Fix the engine fault first. The factory inspection procedure for C1201 starts with the engine control system. It never touches the VSC system first. EVAP leak codes mean gas cap first, then a smoke test if the code returns. O2 or air fuel sensor heater codes mean test the sensor circuit, then replace the sensor. Low voltage means charge or replace the battery and check the charging system. The VSC lights usually clear with the repair.
- 5. Clear the codes and drive. Clear with the scanner and drive normally for a few days. EVAP monitors need several drive cycles to run, so a gas cap fix will not clear instantly. If the trio comes back, the fault is still there. Keep diagnosing.
- 6. No check engine light? Now suspect the VSC system itself. This is the only branch where the VSC system is the prime suspect. Read the ABS and VSC codes with the paperclip method. Common ones: wheel speed sensor codes C1235 through C1239, yaw rate and deceleration sensor codes C1243 through C1245, and C1241 for low battery voltage. If the lights appeared right after a lift, an alignment, or a tire change, suspect zero point calibration, covered below.
The Usual Suspects
These are the faults owners report most often behind the trio, with the codes they set.
Gas cap and EVAP leaks. The single most common cause. Codes P0442 (small leak), P0456 (very small leak), P0455 (gross leak), and P0441 (purge flow) all point at the evaporative emissions system, and the gas cap is the first thing to check. Tighten it three clicks and give the monitors a few days of driving. Inspect the cap seal for cracks or a flattened gasket. One owner resolved P0442 and P0456 with a new cap, and the lights stayed off.
Gas cap part numbers by generation.
| Model | Years | Part number |
|---|---|---|
| GX470 | 2003 to 2009 | 77300-33070 |
| GX460 | 2010 to 2015 | 77300-06040 |
| GX460 | 2016 to 2021 | Confirm by VIN |
| GX460 | 2022 to 2023 | 77300-53030 |
| GX550 | 2024 to 2025 | 77300-53030 |
If the code returns with a good cap, the leak is elsewhere and needs a smoke test. Do not let anyone tell you a loose cap caused true limp mode; owners report that EVAP codes alone do not explain a truck that will barely move.
Oxygen and air fuel sensor faults. Heater circuit codes in the P0135, P0155, and P0136 family are regular trio triggers. One owner had the check engine light plus VSC TRAC plus VSC OFF with a P0136 and traced it to an oxygen sensor problem. Test the heater circuit before replacing the sensor, and replace it with the correct part for that bank and position. Denso supplies the original sensors, so a genuine Denso replacement is the safe pick. Fitment can vary by production date and catalog, so confirm by VIN before ordering.
| Model | Years | Position | Denso part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| GX470 | 2003 to 2004 | Upstream | 234-4138 (eBay) |
| GX470 | 2003 to 2004 | Downstream | 234-4260 (eBay) |
| GX470 | 2005 to 2009 | Upstream (air fuel ratio) | 234-9051 (eBay) |
| GX470 | 2005 to 2009 | Downstream | 234-4261 (eBay) |
| GX460 | 2010 to 2013 | Upstream (air fuel ratio) | 234-9026 (eBay) |
| GX460 | 2010 to 2013 | Downstream | 234-4260 (eBay) |
| GX460 | 2014 to 2019 | Upstream (air fuel ratio) | 234-9145 (eBay) |
| GX460 | 2014 to 2021 | Downstream | 234-4927 (eBay) |
| GX460 | 2020 to 2023 | Upstream | Confirm by VIN |
| GX460 | 2022 to 2023 | Downstream | Confirm by VIN |
Low battery voltage. A weak battery or a charging problem sets C1241 in the skid control ECU and lights the tree. This one bites people because the truck still starts and the accessories still work. Voltage that is merely low, not dead, is enough to upset the modules. If the battery is more than a few years old, load test it.
Wheel speed sensors. One at each hub. When a sensor or its wiring fails, you get C1235 through C1239. But note the branch rule: wheel speed sensor faults normally light the ABS and VSC lights without a check engine light. If you have the full trio with a CEL, the wheel speed sensors are probably not your problem.

Reading Codes Without a Shop
You need two things: a scanner and a port. The port is under the driver side dash. For the scanner, a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter such as the OBDLink MX+ paired with a phone app reads and clears engine codes, shows live data, and pays for itself the first time you do not drive to a shop for a gas cap code. Most auto parts stores will also read your codes for free, which is the shadetree option if you own no scanner at all.
Know the limit of a basic reader. Generic OBD-II shows engine P-codes. It usually cannot see ABS, VSC, or TRAC chassis codes. If you are on the no-CEL branch of the flowchart and your reader shows nothing, that does not mean there are no codes. The paperclip method below reads chassis codes with a jumper wire. No scanner needed.
Reading ABS, VSC, and TRAC Codes With a Paperclip
The GX470 and GX460 both support blink code reading for the ABS and VSC systems. No scanner required.

Read the codes. Connect TC (pin 13) to CG (pin 4) with a jumper and turn the ignition ON with the engine off. ABS codes flash on the ABS warning light. VSC and TRAC codes flash on the slip indicator light. If the system is normal, both lights blink steadily at 0.25-second intervals.
Codes are 2-digit. The tens blink first, then a 1.5-second pause, then the ones blink. Code 21 is two blinks, a pause, then one blink. A single code repeats after a 4-second pause. Multiple codes are separated by 2.5-second pauses, the whole set repeats after 4 seconds, and the lowest-numbered code displays first.
Clear the codes. With TC and CG still connected and the ignition ON, press the brake pedal 8 or more times within 5 seconds. Then turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper.
Do not jumper TS (pin 12) when you mean TC (pin 13). TS puts the truck in test mode for zero point calibration. TC reads the codes. And note the reverse: the old OBD-I paperclip trick does not work for engine P codes on these trucks. All OBD-II vehicles need a scanner for those.
When It Actually IS a VSC Problem
VSC or ABS lights with no check engine light is a different diagnostic path. The skid control system has its own sensors and its own codes, and now they are leaders, not followers.
The common causes: a failed wheel speed sensor or damaged wiring at one hub (C1235 through C1239), a yaw rate or deceleration sensor fault (C1243 through C1245), low system voltage (C1241), or low brake fluid. Owners chasing an ABS plus VSC plus TRAC plus VSC OFF plus BRAKE combination with no check engine light have found chassis codes like C1223, C1246, C1249, and C1340, which live entirely in the brake control system. Read them with the paperclip method above. No chassis scanner needed.
This is also where zero point calibration lives. If the VSC lights came on right after a lift, an alignment, or a tire size change, read the next section before buying any sensor.
Zero Point Calibration After Suspension or Alignment Work
The skid control ECU remembers the zero points of the yaw rate sensor, the deceleration sensor, and the steering angle sensor. Those stored values describe a stock truck. After you lift the truck, get an alignment, or change tire size, the stored zero points no longer match reality and the VSC system lights up to complain.
The fix is a zero point calibration, which resets those stored values to the truck as it sits now. It needs no scanner. A jumper between TS (pin 12) and CG (pin 4) of the DLC3 port does it in two phases: clear the old data, then calibrate on a level surface. The full step-by-step procedure is in the dedicated zero point calibration guide. A dealer or a shop with Toyota diagnostic software can also do it as a quick service visit. If you just lifted the truck, see the lift guide for the full suspension picture, then do the calibration.

No Start With Flashing Dash Lights
This is the second question this guide covers. The truck will not start and the dash lights are flashing. There are two common causes and they feel similar, so sort them with this test.

Step one: turn the key to ON without cranking. Watch the security indicator, the red car-with-a-key icon. On a truck that recognizes the key, the light goes out. If it keeps flashing with the key in, the immobilizer is not reading your key. Try the other key. Take other keys and transponder fobs off the ring, because a second transponder near the ignition can confuse the reader. Owners report that a spare recognized key started the truck immediately when the first key was not recognized. Note that the remote fob battery only runs the lock and unlock buttons. Owners report the immobilizer chip in the key is passive, so a dead fob battery does not cause an immobilizer no-start.
Step two: if the security light behaves, try to crank. Rapid clicking from the starter plus flashing headlights and dash lights while cranking is the classic weak battery. It fools people because the radio and dome lights still work. Those take almost no current. The starter takes hundreds of amps, and a battery that is weak under load collapses the moment you ask. Owners have chased this exact symptom to a battery that tested fine at rest and failed under load. Get the battery load tested. Most parts stores do it free.
How to tell them apart. Immobilizer: engine cranks normally or does nothing at all, security light keeps flashing with the key in. Weak battery: rapid clicking, everything dims and flashes while cranking, security light behaves normally in the ON position.
Parts and Tools
- OBD-II scanner. A Bluetooth adapter such as the OBDLink MX+ with a phone app. Reads and clears engine codes and shows live data. Shadetree alternative: free code reading at most auto parts stores.
- Digital multimeter. For battery voltage, sensor heater circuits, and general electrical checks. A basic meter is fine.
- Battery load tester. The only honest way to condemn a weak battery. Shadetree alternative: most parts stores load test batteries for free.
- Battery terminal brush. Corroded terminals cause voltage drop that lights the tree. Shadetree alternative: baking soda and water with an old toothbrush, then rinse and dry.
- Replacement gas cap. Only after an EVAP code and a look at the old cap seal. Do not buy one blind for a non-EVAP code. Part numbers by model are in the gas cap table in the Usual Suspects section above.
- Replacement oxygen or air fuel sensor. Only after heater circuit codes and a circuit test point at the sensor. Denso numbers by model are in the sensor table in the Usual Suspects section above. Do not buy one blind for a code that has not been diagnosed to the sensor.
- Basic hand tools. Wheel speed sensor replacement is usually one bolt and one connector per hub once you know which corner the code names.
FAQ
Why do VSC TRAC and VSC OFF come on with the check engine light?
Because the engine computer told the skid control computer about an engine fault, and the skid control computer turned TRAC and VSC off in response. The factory manual documents this as DTC C1201 and its procedure is to fix the engine fault first. The VSC lights are followers.
Can I still drive it with the Christmas tree lit?
If the truck drives normally, short gentle trips while you diagnose are reasonable. If it misfires, has no power, overheats, or the oil or temperature warnings join the party, stop driving it. An EVAP code will not strand you. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire. Do not drive it if you can avoid it. The misfire dumps raw fuel into the catalytic converters and can destroy them in minutes. In California, replacement converters are brutally expensive and CARB-compliant options are hard to find. A tow is cheaper than a new converter.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the lights?
It clears the stored codes, and the lights go out until the fault is detected again. That usually takes one or two drive cycles. Clearing codes without a repair is not a fix. It also wipes fuel trims and readiness monitors, which can cause a failed emissions test right after.
My gas cap fixed it. Do I need a new cap?
If tightening the cap cleared a P0442, P0456, or P0455 and the code stays gone, inspect the seal and keep driving. If the seal is cracked or flattened, replace the cap. If the code returns with a good cap, the leak is elsewhere and needs a smoke test.
VSC lights are on but there is no check engine light. What now?
Different path. The fault is in the brake or VSC system itself. Read the ABS and VSC codes with the paperclip method. No chassis scanner needed. Suspects are wheel speed sensors, the yaw rate and deceleration sensor, low system voltage, and low brake fluid. If the lights appeared after a lift, alignment, or tire change, do a zero point calibration.
The lights came on right after my lift. What happened?
The skid control ECU’s stored sensor zero points no longer match the truck. Do a zero point calibration. It takes a paperclip and a level surface. The dedicated zero point calibration guide has the full procedure. See the lift guide linked above for the suspension side of the job.
The truck will not start and the dash lights flash. Battery or immobilizer?
Turn the key to ON without cranking. If the red security light keeps flashing, the immobilizer does not recognize the key. Try the other key and remove other transponders from the ring. If the security light goes out normally but cranking gives rapid clicking with flashing lights, the battery is weak under load. Get it load tested.
Does the key fob battery affect the immobilizer?
Owners report no. The fob battery runs the remote lock buttons. The immobilizer chip in the key is passive and needs no battery. A dead fob battery does not cause an immobilizer no-start.
Should I buy a GX with the Christmas tree lit?
Maybe, at the right price. The cause is often a gas cap or a sensor, which is cheap. But price it as the worst case until you read the codes. Bring a scanner to the test drive and read every code before negotiating. Our buying guide has the full inspection checklist.
