Every GX has eight fluids that keep it alive. This guide lists all of them for the GX470 and the GX460: the exact factory spec, how much each one takes, and when to change it. A GX550 section at the end covers what the 2024 warranty guide confirms. Every number below comes from the factory repair manuals, the Lexus owner’s manuals, or the warranty guides, footnoted at the end.

Fluids at a glance

Engine oil
The 2UZ-FE in the GX470 and the 1UR-FE in the GX460 are both easy on oil, but they take different grades and different amounts. Do not mix them up.
| GX470 (2UZ-FE) | GX460 (1UR-FE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | API SL Energy-Conserving or ILSAC multigrade [1] | ILSAC multigrade [2] |
| Viscosity | SAE 5W-30 (best choice); 10W-30 if 5W-30 is unavailable [1] | SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 [2] |
| With filter | 6.5 qt (6.2 L) [1] | 8.2 qt (7.8 L) [2] |
| Without filter | 6.0 qt (5.7 L) [1] | 7.8 qt (7.4 L) [2] |
| Dry fill | 7.5 qt (7.1 L) [1] | 9.9 qt (9.4 L) [2] |
| Drain plug torque | 29 ft lb (39 N·m) [1] | 30 ft lb (40 N·m) [2] |
| Drain plug gasket | 90430-12031 [20] | 90430-12031 [20] |
| Factory interval | Every 6 months or 5,000 miles [15] | Every 12 months or 10,000 miles; every 6 months or 5,000 miles under severe conditions [16] |
The GX470 uses a spin-on filter. The GX460 uses a cartridge element inside a plastic housing cap. Do not overtighten the GX460 filter cap. It cracks.
The 0W-20 vs 5W-30 debate (GX460)
The 2010 GX460 owner’s manual listed several acceptable grades: 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30. Later owner’s manuals narrowed it to ILSAC GF-5 and then GF-6A oil with SAE 0W-20 recommended, and 5W-20 allowed only as an emergency substitute to be replaced at the next change [17].
That history is why owners argue about it. The manual’s position is clear: run 0W-20. The manual says 0W-20. If you pour in something else, that is between you and your engine.
The 5,000 vs 10,000 mile debate
The GX470 schedule is 5,000 miles or 6 months, period [15]. The GX460 schedule calls for oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months under normal use, and every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe use, which includes off-road driving, dusty roads, towing, and heavy loading [16]. The GX550 follows the same 10,000/5,000 split as the GX460 [19].
Many GX owners change at 5,000 miles regardless, treating it as cheap insurance on a truck they plan to keep past 300,000 miles. The factory severe-service schedule agrees with them if you tow or go off-road.
Shadetree notes: warm the engine for a few minutes first so the oil drains fast. Always replace the drain plug gasket. On the GX460, loosen the filter cap a few turns and let the housing drain before removing it fully, or oil runs down your arm.
Automatic transmission fluid
The 2003 GX470 uses Toyota Type T-IV. Everything else here uses Toyota Genuine ATF WS, and nothing else. The factory warns that other fluids can cause abnormal noise, vibration, and transmission damage [4].
| GX470 (A750F 5-speed) | GX460 (A760F 6-speed) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid | 2003: Type T-IV. 2004-2009: Toyota Genuine ATF WS [3] | Toyota Genuine ATF WS [4] |
| Dry fill | 11.0 qt (10.4 L) [3] | 11.7 qt (11.1 L) [4] |
| Drain-and-fill | 3.2 qt (3.0 L) [3] | 3.2 qt (3.0 L) [4] |
| Drain plug gasket | 35178-30010 [20] | 35178-30010 [20] |
| Level check | 2003: dipstick, HOT range at 158-176 F fluid temp. 2004-2009: sealed, overflow plug [3] | Overflow plug, 115-126 F fluid temp, engine idling [4] |
The 2003 GX470 has a dipstick. The 2004-2009 GX470 and all GX460s are sealed. On the sealed transmissions the level is set from the overflow plug on the pan with the fluid at 115-126 F and the engine idling. Too cold or too hot and the level will be wrong [4].
Lexus specifies ATF replacement at 60,000 miles under severe service: towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier, heavy vehicle loading, or extensive idling and low-speed driving [16] [19]. For longevity, treat 60,000 miles as the drain-and-fill interval on all three trucks if you tow or go off-road. One drain-and-fill per interval is enough when the transmission shows no symptoms. A drain-and-fill replaces about a third of the fluid, which is fine on a healthy transmission.
Shadetree notes: measure exactly what comes out and put that much back in. A drain pan with quart markings pays for itself here. On the 2003 GX470, check the level with the dipstick after a drive. On sealed transmissions, you need a way to read fluid temp. A cheap OBD2 dongle with a transmission temp PID works. For background on the cooler circuit, see the transmission health and cooling guide.
Transfer case fluid
This is the one people mix up, because the two trucks take different fluids.
| GX470 | GX460 | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid | API GL-5, SAE 75W-90 [5] | Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear oil LF or equivalent, SAE 75W [6] |
| Capacity | 1.5 qt (1.4 L) [5] | 1.5 qt (1.4 L) [6] |
Do not put 75W-90 in the GX460 transfer case. It takes the LF 75W fluid. On the GX460, add the oil slowly, a little at a time, waiting several minutes between additions. The fill passage is restrictive and it will spit back at you if you rush [6].

Front and rear differential gear oil
The differentials are fill-to-level. There is no dipstick. You fill until oil reaches the bottom of the fill plug hole [7] [8].
| GX470 | GX460 | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid | Hypoid gear oil API GL-5. Above 0 F: SAE 90. Below 0 F: SAE 80W or 80W-90 [7] | Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT SAE 75W-85 API GL-5 or equivalent [8] |
| Front capacity | 1.5 qt (1.40 L) [7] | 1.4-1.5 qt (1.35-1.45 L) [8] |
| Rear capacity | 3.2 qt (3.05 L) [7] | 2.8-2.9 qt (2.65-2.75 L) [8] |
Differential plug torques, GX470 and GX460 (verified identical):
| Plug | Torque |
|---|---|
| Front drain plug | 48 ft lb (65 N·m) [7] [8] |
| Front fill plug | 29 ft lb (39 N·m) [7] [8] |
| Rear drain and fill plugs | 36 ft lb (49 N·m) [7] [8] |
The iron rule of diff and transfer service: always crack the fill plug loose before you pull the drain plug. If the fill plug is seized and you have already drained the oil, you are stuck. Penetrating oil and patience beat a breaker bar and regret.
Shadetree notes: a $15 fluid transfer pump or a long-neck funnel with a flexible hose makes filling the front diff possible without removing anything. The rear diff is easy to reach.
Power steering fluid
Both trucks use ATF in the power steering system, not dedicated power steering fluid.
| GX470 | GX460 | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid | ATF DEXRON II or III [9] | ATF DEXRON II or III or equivalent [10] |
| Total capacity | 1.0 qt (1.0 L) [9] | 1.1 qt (1.0 L) [10] |
Check the level in the reservoir with the engine off. The reservoir has HOT and COLD range marks. Use the one that matches the fluid temperature [9].
Lexus publishes no replacement interval for power steering fluid. Every 120,000 miles, suck the reservoir dry with a turkey baster (dedicated to garage use), refill with fresh ATF, and call it done. One round is enough. The fluid gets fully replaced anyway whenever the pump or rack is serviced. The GX550 also runs a hydraulic system with a see-through reservoir [19]; the same 120,000-mile refresh applies.
Engine coolant
Both trucks use the pink Toyota Super Long Life Coolant, premixed 50/50. Do not use plain water alone, and do not mix in green conventional coolant [11].
| GX470 | GX460 | |
|---|---|---|
| Coolant | Toyota Super Long Life Antifreeze Coolant or equivalent [11] | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent high-quality ethylene glycol, non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate with hybrid organic acid technology [12] |
| Capacity | 13.6 qt (12.9 L) [11] | 14.5 qt (13.7 L) without rear heater; 16.3 qt (15.4 L) with rear heater [12] |
The factory pink coolant is long-life. If the system has been converted to green coolant by a previous owner, either flush it completely back to pink or stick with what is in there. Mixing coolant chemistries is what causes problems, not any one type by itself.
A single radiator drain only replaces about half the coolant. To refresh most of it without a flush machine: drain the radiator, refill, drive until fully warm with the heater on hot, let it cool, and repeat twice more. Three cycles replaces the large majority of the old coolant.
Shadetree notes: drain from the radiator petcock and the block drains for a full change. Refill slowly and burp the system with the front end raised. The heater must be on hot so the heater core fills.
Brake fluid
Both trucks: SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 [13] [14].
Brake fluid is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system from the inside. The Lexus maintenance schedule includes brake fluid replacement at the 30,000-mile services [16]. If your fluid is dark in the reservoir, it is overdue.
Shadetree notes: gravity bleeding works fine. Open the bleeder, keep the reservoir topped up, and let it drip. Do not let the reservoir run dry or you will be bleeding the ABS actuator, which is a much worse afternoon. On the GX460, release accumulator pressure first by pumping the brake pedal 40 times with the engine off before setting the reservoir level [14]. For the full brake service procedure, see the GX460 brake guide.
Synthetic alternatives
The factory fluids are the safe default. These are the spec-equivalent synthetics worth knowing about:
- Power steering (DEXRON II/III): any licensed Dexron III-compatible fluid works. Full-synthetic options include Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, which carries a Dexron III builder approval, and Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle ATF, a full-synthetic Dexron III-suitable fluid. Do not use these in the transmission. The A750F and A760F take ATF WS only.
- Differentials (GX460 75W-85 GL-5 LT): Ravenol DGL 75W-85 and Eurol MTF-FE 75W-85 GL-5 are listed as fully synthetic equivalents to Toyota Differential Gear Oil LT 08885-02506.
- Transfer case (GX460 LF 75W): Ravenol MTF-3 SAE 75W and Eurol MTF SAE 75W are listed as synthetic equivalents to Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF 75W. These are spec equivalents from a specialist source, not confirmed GX460 fitments.
- Brake fluid: any DOT 3 works. DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based and compatible with DOT 3 systems. DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never be mixed into a DOT 3/4 system.
GX550 (2024+)
The 2024 GX550 Warranty & Maintenance Guide is on file [19]. It covers intervals, not fluid grades or capacities, so grades and capacities below come from your owner’s manual.
- Engine oil: every 12 months or 10,000 miles, or when the oil maintenance reminder appears. Every 6 months or 5,000 miles under special operating conditions (off-road, dirt or dusty roads, towing, heavy loading).
- ATF: replace at 60,000 miles when towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier, heavy vehicle loading, or extensive idling and low-speed driving. One drain-and-fill per interval is enough without symptoms.
- Transfer case oil: replace when driving off-road, on dirt roads, or on dusty roads. Also under towing and heavy loading.
- Front and rear differential oil: replace under towing, heavy vehicle loading, extensive idling, or low-speed driving.
- Power steering: hydraulic system with a see-through reservoir. Check the level visually; fluid specs are in the owner’s manual. Same 120,000-mile reservoir refresh.
- Engine and intercooler coolant: replace at 10 years or 100,000 miles.
- Brake fluid: replacement at the 30,000-mile services.
